The Band’s Visit, Harry Potter win big at 2018 Tony Awards

The quietly moving and somewhat unknown musical The Band’s Visit practically swept the 72nd Tony Awards tonight, winning ten awards and beating out several blockbusters.

In addition to the coveted Best Musical trophy, The Band’s Visit – about how the lives of lonely strangers intersect in an Israeli desert town – won Tonys for direction, leading actor and actress in a musical, book, actor in a featured role, and for several technical categories. It won in ten of the 11 categories it was nominated, steamrolling over hit shows such as Frozen and Mean Girls, both of which were shut out.

The night also belonged to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a nearly six-hour play split into two parts. It won six trophies, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play.

In the revivals category, a two-part Angels in America won three awards, while Once on This Island won for best musical revival, beating out sure-things My Fair Lady and Carousel.

Of the performances, the most anticipated came from singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen, who received a “Special” Tony Award, presented by old friend Billy Joel, for his wildly successful run on Broadway. His intimate acoustic shows, “Springsteen On Broadway,” have grossed more than $65 million since opening in October.

Sitting alone at a piano, he performed a ghostly version of My Hometown, offering a sneak peek of the intimate show, which runs through December (full clip at bottom of this story).

There were plenty of moving speeches but the most poignant moment came from the performance by students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., who performed an uplifting passage from Rent’s “Seasons of Love” only a few months after surviving a mass shooting.  The school’s theater teacher, Melody Herzfeld, was named the recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education Award.

The show was hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban.

  1. Loved your article! Being the theater nerd that I am, I saw most of the new musicals nominated this year. So thrilled with The Band’s Visit and all the recognition it received at last night’s Tony’s!
