The Broadway League’s Spring Road Conference wrapped up Saturday, and what a way to go: Minutes before the four-day Broadway industry event ended, out walked special guest Jane Lynch, who treated conference attendees to one funny, career-spanning story after another. Lynch stars as Miss Hannigan in the Tony-nominated revival of ANNIE.
Among the weekend’s other guest speakers: David Hyde Pierce, Sigourney Weaver and Kristine Nielsen, who star together in the play VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE; the graceful Cicely Tyson, who stars with Cuba Gording Jr. and Vanessa Williams in THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL; and Tom Hanks, who, the day after making a surprise appearance at the conference, made an encore surprise appearance at a midnight conference party at historic restaurant Sardi’s; Hanks is promoting his role in the play LUCKY GUY.
We saw more shows Friday and Saturday. Favorites included the musical revival PIPPIN, which is up for 10 Tony Awards, and MOTOWN THE MUSICAL, which had the sold-out crowd singing, shouting and dancing along. The show, which chronicles the life of Berry Gordy and his landmark record label, features nearly 70 Motown hits. We hope to bring either show – or maybe both – to Bass Hall in the future.
The Spring Road Conference, held at the Millennium Hotel and historic Hudson Theatre, is a yearly event in which Broadway presenters, producers, press agents and other industry insiders come together for four days of panels, workshops and new Broadway shows. Until next year!
