The Broadway League’s 2012 Spring Road Conference officially started yesterday. It’s the largest attended conference in the League’s history, which is a great sign for the health of the Broadway industry.
But to backtrack to last night, we saw the new Disney Musical NEWSIES, based on the 1992 Disney film of the same name. Nominated for eight
Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, the show is filled with amazing choreography, and lead actor Jeremy Jordan is outstanding. It definitely has the potential to be a great touring road show!
The conference started yesterday morning with opening remarks from two actors, Estelle Parsons and Kelli O’Hara, from the Broadway revival of NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, which is up for 10 Tony Awards. The conference then got underway with workshops targeted at marketing and booking agents/presenters. These were great opportunities to sit in roundtable conversations and discuss current issues and challenges, as well as successes. The Broadway community is very collaborative and supportive and this conference is a great way to network with your peers across the country.
Another exciting component of the Spring Road Conference is the “Creative Conversations” that feature actors from the current Broadway shows. Yesterday’s “Creative Conversations” spotlighted two current Broadway hits: EVITA and OTHER DESERT CITIES.
Both shows are excellent productions. We had the opportunity to see OTHER DESERT CITIES last fall in New York and we saw EVITA last night. This new production of EVITA boasts brilliant lighting and scenery and stars a superb cast. And yes, Ricky Martin does a nice job in his role as Che.
We also attended two receptions yesterday – a pre-show reception hosted by ONCE and the post-show cast party hosted by THE BOOK OF MORMON. The cast of ONCE gave a stirring performance during their pre-show reception at the Hard Rock Café. Definitely looking forward to seeing that show tonight!
This year’s conference is off to great start! Stay tuned for another report from day three in tomorrow’s blog.
